Routing

Routing in ianaiERP defines the sequence of operations and resources required to manufacture a product. It's a critical component of work orders that outlines the production process flow from start to finish.

Overview

  • Routing specifies the step-by-step operations needed to transform raw materials into finished goods.
  • Each operation in a routing includes details about work centers, labor, setup time, and run time.
  • Properly configured routings help optimize production scheduling, resource allocation, and cost calculation.

Creating a Routing

To create a new routing:

  1. Navigate to Manufacturing > Routings in the main menu.
  2. Click the New Routing button.
  3. Enter a name and description for the routing.
  4. Add operations to define the manufacturing process flow.

Routing Components

A routing consists of multiple operations, each with the following details:

  • Operation Name: A descriptive name for the manufacturing step
  • Work Center: The resource or machine where the operation is performed
  • Description: Detailed instructions for performing the operation
  • Setup Time: Time required to prepare the work center for the operation
  • Run Time: Time required to complete the operation per unit

Adding Operations

To add an operation to a routing:

  1. Click the Add Operation button in the routing editor.
  2. Fill in the operation details including name, work center, and time requirements.
  3. Set the sequence number to determine the order of operations.
  4. Add any special instructions or requirements for the operation.

Assigning Routings to Work Orders

When creating a work order:

  1. Navigate to Manufacturing > Work Orders.
  2. Create a new work order or select an existing one.
  3. In the work order form, select the appropriate routing.
  4. The system will automatically populate the operations from the routing.
  5. Adjust operation details as needed for the specific work order.

Assingnig Default Routings to Items

  1. Navigate to Inventory > Items.
  2. Select the item for which you want to assign a default routing.
  3. In the item details, navigate to the Routing tab.
  4. Select the desired routing from the dropdown menu.
  5. Save the changes. Now, the routing will be automatically assigned to the work orders for this item.

Time and Cost Calculation

Routings help calculate important production metrics:

  • Labor and Machine Costs: You can set up cost items such as labor, machine, overhead, etc. in each work center
  • Total Production Cost: The system automatically calculates actual time and costs based on the routing operations and work center rates
  • Overhead Integration: All calculated costs are added to the overheads section of the work order, providing accurate costing for manufactured items

These calculations are critical for:

  • Accurate product costing
  • Profitability analysis
  • Production efficiency measurement
  • Resource allocation optimization

Routing Rules

You can create routing rules to automatically adjust the routing for a work order based on the item and its options.

  1. Navigate to Manufacturing > Routing Rules.
  2. Set up the conditions with variable and operator and vlue.
  3. Set up the routing to be used if the conditions are met.
  4. You can use variables for setup time and run time/unit in the routing rule.
  5. Save the routing rule.

Now, the system will automatically adjust the routing for the work order based on the item and its options.

Best Practices

  1. Create standardized routings for regularly manufactured products.
  2. Include detailed operation instructions to ensure consistent quality.
  3. Regularly review and update routings to incorporate process improvements.
  4. Balance the level of detail—include enough information for clear guidance without excessive complexity.
  5. Consider alternative routings for products that can be manufactured through different processes.

For optimal production management, ensure your routings are aligned with your Bill of Materials (BOM) structure.
